Startup-Sutra-4.2: How to manage your equity?

Image
A small recap- You have build your product, you have a small but meaning full team, who is chugging along with you and working as hard as you are, you have a co-founder which as strategically involved as you are and you have money from your elder brother and an angel investor. You have a valuation of 12 crores and a well distributed pie chart. By the dilution which has happened in recent past, is it healthy? It is good too and bad too. Good because you have a larger chunk of money to utilize and bad because you have lost certain amount share and hence control over the company. Now your employees, your co- founder, elder brother and the investor will have right to say in most of the decisions.  But that’s alright as you are the boss and you will always have the last say till you own major chunk of your company. But make sure, you involve those people only who respect your work, your product and your plans rather than shoving their plans in your mind. So, what now? ...

Startup-Sutra-4.1: How to manage your equity?

Image
Opening a startup teaches you many things and researching over some taught me many things. Equity sharing is one of those learning. Let’s start a hypothetical startup called “DiscoverYou”. It has been started by you and you have done some initial work on it like some market research or initial product designing. It looked amazing and you thought about going forward with it with whatever money you have right now. Let’s us discuss the stages involved in my first article of two article series- How to manage your equity? Stage1: Your Company is still un-registered, but you have started gaining some value out of it. You look happy and have not thought about equity yet. Don’t worry just chug along for some time and enjoy the feeling of being your own boss. :-) Stage 2: Phew! It’s harder than you thought. What to do? Idea, let’s get a co-founder. You find someone who can help in making the prototype little better and is as crazy about your idea as you are for it. You find som...

The Dream Vs Goal Encounter:

Image
Part-1 Whenever I retire for the day, there is a sense of panicky in me. Something keeps me awake. Something tells me that Mrigank today you were non productive. Something tells me that Mrigank you are the only person that can prove 80/20 principle wrong, as your efforts are zero and you want to chase heaven.  Something tells me to wake up and work a little bit to know that there is a certain amount of beauty associated with hard work. And then, dream hushes that ‘something in me’. In dream I see myself as the most charismatic person, a person with every bit of knowledge, a person who have moulded time in such way that I can squeeze out 25 hours from one day, productivity breaking all the records and I am diving in the pool which Uncle Scrooge used to dive in. Is there any connection of my dream and ‘me at present’? Or it’s purely a fit of pleasure which will seize to exist as soon as I gulp down a potion of reality. ********** Part-2 Whenever I retire for ...

Chapter 10<-Link A story of a friend..by a friend... “Hello” said Mridul in sleepy voice; the holidays had made him lethargic. “Hey! Mridul, guess who is on the line” it was Kanishka, as fresh as the morning. “Hey Kanu! Sorry I was still sleeping, but you look quite fresh” he was little surprised by her call. “I wake up at 7oclock every day, not like you fatty” giggled Kanu. “That’s why you are too gorgeous sweet heart. So, why did the queen call her servant?” flirting as usual. “Nothing dear…I was getting bored, so thought let’s talk to you and plan an outing” “Where ma’am? It will be an honor to be your personal guide.” ‘Butler’ could have been his new career. “Let’s go to Worlds of wonder. Just you and me…” Kanishka paused for a second deliberately. “Wow just you and I” Mridul nearly jumped out of bed. “And our friends…off course” chuckled Kanishka. “Alright ma’am, as you say. Then let me just freshen up and talk to others. Bye de...

Chapter 7<-Link A story of a friend..by a friend.... The first minors were waiting at the corner,so for sometime friendship was put into the attic safely. “ Yaar, Meri toh lag gayi ” Prateek was in deep remorse after the first minors. “What happened Bhai ? Itna pareshan kyu hai ” Mridul asked about Prateek’s reason of tensed look. “I am gonna fail in this exam”…’was he trying to gain sympathy?’ Mridul thought. “ Arre , don’t worry everybody will clear the exams so just chill” Parth joined in. “Let’s go out for a movie today” Malvika suggested while entering the canteen, “It will be a great fun! It’s been a time that we have gone out.“ She continued. “Yipeeee, we are going to watch movie…movie...movie…but which one?” Kanishka was already excited about the plan and was banging 'the' canteen’s table. “Aiyee…don’t bang the table” Ramesh Uncle said while pouring some tea for a professor. No one can argue girls; same was the scenario in the...

Chapter 2<-Link A Story of a Friend..by a Friend “Mamma I am home, really tired…taking a short nap” said Mridul and went straight to his bedroom. “ B eta! Khaana tyaar hai …have it na” yelled his mother from kitchen, telling Mridul that food was ready. Mridul was already inside his room. Hours passed and he didn’t come out of his room. “I don’t know why he is behaving like this, he is spoiling home’s atmosphere” said his mother with lots of concern and anger at same time. “Why are you complaining this to me, how would I know what has happened to him? He never shares anything with me.” argued his father, while changing the channel of television. “It’s of no use to talk to you and him, you both are screwing up my life” asserted his mother and went to fetch a glass of water for Mr. Gupta. Mridul was listening to the conversation of his parents, when suddenly his mobile phone rang... *Chapter 4 coming up

Walking Away-02

Chapter 1 <-Link A story of a friend by a friend.... "Hi guys! This is Mridul Gupta” he introduced himself with a smile. Though the introduction was very brief; it was enough to tell what he was like with that smile on his face and gleaming eyes. Engineering colleges have always lacked such "confidence" as he thought, and when its government college, this could be as rarest as Pluto getting accreditation as ninth planet by Earthlings. He had developed this image way before he joined the college. Government versus Private College; which one was better he was yet to decide.  Within no time Mridul became part of each personalized group of class.  Few girls were behind him or he thought so, but he was clear about his life goals and his ‘personal’ interests. The fire in his eyes never went unnoticed by anyone; an average student and a no player in his school time, has changed himself no bounds. The change was nice, he was nominated as the CR and he took...

The eternal celibacy

Image
The journey starts here It’s been a while since I have interacted with you my friends. During this period of dormancy I got multiple mails regarding “Why the hell I have stopped writing?” and I have nothing to say except apologizing for my “mistake”. But I am really grateful to all of you who are interested in reading what I call- “The thought syndrome”. During this period I was trying to self introspect as well as was trying to explore this world to get something for you all. It was this time only when I went through a novel written by all so famous Amish-‘The secret of Nagas’, a book one should read, a pure pleasure of “contemporary” mythology.  Now I knew that only this topic can quench my thirst of writing, a topic which is so exhilarating and yet too solemn- ‘THE ETERNAL CELIBACY’, a path to complete enlightenment, a path that leads us to God. ******** Celibacy is a period of life that a man or woman enjoys with a tag on their forehead –“STATUS-UNMARRI...

The ghost from the girlfriend's past

Image
The training was going ‘miserably’ fun, as it was my first time hands on experience on a colour Television. After getting back from the factory, I was sweating excessively in gym. I was tired to hell and the walk to my home back was looking like never ending. Finally I reached my home and the body ache forced me to skip my dinner (first in my lifetime!) and go to my bed with full throttle AC. ******** “Mrigank actually I can’t give you my number...umm...I mean my parents don’t like me talking to boys. I am sorry.” said a beautiful voice, the person I had big crush on. “Yeah! It’s OK no problem. So how can we be in contact after school?” I asked after a little embarrassment. “We can be in contact through mails. It’s fun...I mean the anxiety of expecting a reply and then replying with a smile on. By the way, why didn’t you have lunch? Do you really take our fight that seriously?” she was playing my mind but that was a sweet feeling. “Ya, you are a friend of mine ra...

Happiness that stays forever

Image
I was enjoying my day off from training due to excessive heat. I was online on FB as usual and I was as usual dreaming about high paid jobs after a MBA degree which I was hoping to pursue after my B.Tech.   The life is certainly an amalgam of dreams and the reality and the one who knows the correct ratio of the two can always succeed. My dreams are never ending and so instead of dreaming, I chose to download official guide of GMAT for reading, when suddenly a notification flashed on my desktop “Someone added a new photo: “My best birthday J “. Instantly my hand went on that notification to see what it’s like to call your birthday the best.    There were around 20-24 pictures and that smile on every person’s face that could be seen in the photographs told me enough that why it is the best birthday. The smile was content and full of what...umm...emotions that it seemed like that someone have won the whole world. I realised one thing that day, happiness is not...

Food oh Food

Image
The exams were over and as promised by my dad we would be soon leaving for a trip to Manali. Knowing my food crazy nature and also seeing me not having my food properly during exams my mom got up early to prepare some healthy oil soaked food. The food was ready, the luggage was ready, the car was ready and so were we to hit the road. It was 8 in the morning when we left and by mistake it was the first time in history we left on time which we decided to leave at (Punctual and my family...forget it J ) . The sun was shining over the roof of the car and its heat could be easily felt inside the car running on maximum AC fan speed. Four hours of continuous travelling and my sister’s road sickness had left nothing inside us and we decided to stop at a restaurant- “Sher-e-Punjab”. A railway track running behind the restaurant touching infinity and the sun playing hide and seek behind the woods. It was a beautiful and soothing to eyes if not to body. After having food, my father got bu...

The asthmatic life

Image
My internal exams were going on, but I was much more interested in the thirty first chapter I was writing for my first novel. The title is not known nor was the syllabus for any subject. For me it didn't even matter as I was already out of the ‘rat race’. I duped my mind that studying a day before exam is just like running for the flight which has already boarded. Though I have been competitive from my childhood and the word ‘losing’ never existed for me but winning for me meant EXCELLENCE before SUCCESS. I was travelling in metro rail and was as usual was busy thinking about my novel when I overheard two juniors standing next to me. Guy 1 (Head down, droplet of sweat on his forehead): “I need at least 70 percent marks to sit in for placement; otherwise my father will kill me.” Guy 2 (Taking deep breath while eyes fixed at the women’s compartment): “Ya you are damn correct buddy...what the hell man, the AC is not working in here.” Guy 1 (Showing his con...

The attributive attitude-Part 2

Image
A fter having a six course rich dinner, I decided to have a walk in the newly constructed lush green park behind my home. The salacious green grass, bathed in street light and with it's abnormal beauty was attracting me.  I didn't take much time to remove my slippers and enjoy the cool and soothing effect of moisture soaked tiny-tots. But soon that serenity was lost with a sudden abrasive quarrel between a couple and loud cry of two infants.I was thinking how will those two infants cope up with this atmosphere, which was heavy enough due to the damp condition of air and now due to foul words. Then I remembered about my second edition of "The attributive attitude", I knew what I have to write. I dashed towards my home and switched on my computer, my blog was already beaming on the screen as if "he" already knew, I was coming home with a new thought.                                     ...
